Japan-China Design Symposium and Asia Design Symposium Report

On November 29, 2020, Japan-China Design Symposium was held at the Design Common, a learning support facility on Kyushu University’s Ohashi Campus in Fukuoka. It was initially scheduled in February of the same year but was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The symposium was held online with five Chinese universities and three Japanese universities participated. The plenary session was held with simultaneous interpretation provided in Japanese, Chinese, and English. The theme of the first part was “The Current Status of Design Universities in Japan and China and the Potential and Effects of International Exchange”. Chinese and Japanese universities reported on their educational policies and initiatives in design-related faculties. In both countries, it was shared that interdisciplinary educational programs that go beyond specialized fields are being implemented due to the diversification of needs in the design field. Also, each university shared their international exchange programs. The symposium reaffirmed Japan and China’s need to strengthen their cooperation to promote an Asian approach to design and increase their presence in the region. The theme of the second part was “The Role of Intellectual Property Rights in Design”. In this part, lectures were given on intellectual property rights in Japan and China, respectively. The current status of the law in both countries was shared, which provided a common understanding of the discussion to follow.

The “Asian Design Symposium” was held in the afternoon after the ”Japan-China Design Symposium” on the morning. Asian universities from seven countries, including Japan, engaged in design education discussion online. With the spread of COVID-19 in different countries, how is education being conducted now? Based on the historical background of each country, what qualities are currently required of design professionals? A wide range of topics was also discussed, including creating new academic research fields through collaboration among design universities in Asia.
